THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION
Haiti became an independent nation in 1804. It had the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the western hemisphere. Saint-Domingue (the island of Hispaniola) was a French sugar colony. The western part of Hispaniola, modern day Haiti, became the first independent state in Latin America. The Haitian Revolution lasted from 1791-1803. François-Dominique Toussaint-Louverture led more than 100,000 enslaved people in the revolt. Despite the harshness and cruelty of Saint Domingue slavery there were slave rebellions before the revolution. The runaway slaves were called “maroons”. 35,000 French soldiers died.
